The Rainforest Alliance is an international organization providing certifications for sustainability in forestry, agriculture and tourism. In 1989, the Rainforest Alliance launched the world’s first sustainable forestry certification program to encourage environmentally and socially responsible management of forests, tree farms, and forest resources.

MARINE STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is an independent, non-profit organization which sets a standard for sustainable fishing. MSC’s product label aims to highlight sustainable fishing practices that minimize harm to other sea-life. certifies sustainable fishing practices. The Marine Stewardship Council was founded by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), an international organization focusing on wildlife preservation, and Unilever, a multinational consumer goods company.

THE PROBLEM

-> The Rainforest Alliance has faced criticism for allowing its certification seal to be used on the packaging if just 30% of one ingredient had been bought from certified sources.
